This course will focus on the policy process and strategies for collecting and disseminating research findings to inform and influence that process. The course will be taught through a series of lectures delivered by faculty with extensive experience at the federal, state, and local level in health care policy.

At the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • Recognize how research is used in the policy process;
  • Develop strategies for disseminating research through the media to influence the policy process;
  • Organize effective communication strategies with policymakers to influence decision making;
  • Identify the relevant stakeholders in their area of research who can influence the policy process;
  • Understand the strengths and limitations of participatory research with policymakers; and
  • Describe an engagement strategy with end users including policymakers that can be incorporated into research grants
