This course will provide training in the areas of study design, methods, and data sources that will enable students to conduct scientifically valid and robust pharmacoepidemiologic studies. It will also provide students the opportunity to apply these tools to the review of selected case studies in drug safety and pharmacoepidemiology. Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Identify and apply key epidemiologic study designs for pharmacoepidemiologic research;
  2. Analyze pharmacoepidemiologic studies and perform a critical evaluation of the strengths and limitations of a body of research on a particular drug safety question;
  3. Demonstrate analytical skills to show when advanced pharamcoepidemiologic methods such as propensity scores, marginal structural models, and instrumental variables can be used to improve study design;
  4. Identify key data sources used in pharmacoepidemiology; and
  5. Descibe ethical issues in the conduct of pharmacoepidemiologic research.
