Students will prepare an F-31 application in a weekly structured setting. Each week a new component will be installed. Students will work closely with their advisors to prepare their research question and specific aims. The goal is to be ready for submission by the April NIH cycle. Students will also learn about other graduate student funding mechanisms, and will become familiar with NIH grantsmanship.
Students who successfully complete this course will be able to:
- Understand the various funding mechanisms at their disposal
- Plan and organize their approach to their grant writing
- Prepare each component of the F 31 application
- Develop a research question in consultation with their advisors
- Discuss the major epidemiologic study designs
- Prepare a short and long range career trajectory plan
- Apply their knowledge of structuring a research proposal to their thesis work
- Effectively interact with their program officers and with their advisory team
