Assignment 6b.

Turn in a ½ page critique of the Specific Aims page of your classmate. Score the Specific Aims page on Significance and Innovation, as described below.  I realize that these sections are not explicitly scored for F31s, but reviewers might not remember that (and this will give you practice for other future grants).  Give each a score of 1-9 to each category and write bullet points for the strengths and weaknesses. See the

Scoring Table for Research Grants

Definitions

Minor: easily addressable weakness that does not substantially lessen the impact of the project.
Moderate: weakness that lessens the impact of the project.
Major: weakness that severely limits the impact of the project.

Significance. Does the project address an important problem or a critical barrier to progress in the field? If the aims of the project are achieved, how will scientific knowledge, technical capability, and/or clinical practice be improved? How will successful completion of the aims change the concepts, methods, technologies, treatments, services, or preventative interventions that drive this field?

Innovation. Does the application challenge and seek to shift current research or clinical practice paradigms by utilizing novel theoretical concepts, approaches or methodologies, instrumentation, or interventions?  Are the concepts, approaches or methodologies, instrumentation, or interventions novel to one field of research or novel in a broad sense? Is a refinement, improvement, or new application of theoretical concepts, approaches or methodologies, instrumentation, or interventions proposed?

Below is who will score whose significance page.  Please send your most recent (as of 2/23/15) specific aims page by tomorrow to the name to the left of yours. We will review these in class next week so please complete it by 2 pm on 3/3.
