Dear All,

Elizabeth Rose Mayeda, our first PhD graduate and a friend to many of you, sent me an email recommending some additional readings for additive interaction (please see below).  I will also post the articles in the folder for week #7, where we already have 4 additional readings on this topic.  Enjoy!

Lydia

Hi Lydia,

One concept that I find confusing in the Rothman book is statistical vs. biological interaction. The attached commentary by VanderWeele is relatively short and (I think) clearly written. According to VanderWeele, “mechanistic interaction” is now the preferred term for “biological interaction,” and he clearly explains what mechanistic interaction is, why it is of interest, and how we can assess it. I wanted to pass it along to you because I thought it might be helpful for Epi 2 students. I know they already have a lot to read, but the VanderWeele commentary is relatively short. I also attached the original research article VanderWeele is commenting on, but I think the VanderWeele commentary is helpful on its own.
