Welcome to BIOSTAT 202: Opportunities and Challenges of Complex Biomedical Data: Introduction to the Science of "Big Data"! Due to remote instruction, this course will be a bit different for all of us! IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR THE FIRST DAY OF CLASS IS POSTED BELOW. PLEASE READ!!!

  • Both lecture and computer lab begin Thursday, July 30 from 1:00 PM – 4:15 PM on Zoom: https://ucsf.zoom.us/j/99789000780?pwd=b3JVLzd2cWI5VTJNWkJEOEVDYnQ5UT09
  • Prior to the first class, please watch the first pre-recorded 60-minute lecture available on CLE by Wednesday, July 29.
  • It is crucial that each student install Orange Data Mining software on their own computer before Thursday, July 30. To avoid troubleshooting technical issues during lab, please follow the attached installation instructions ASAP. If you run into any difficulties or have any questions, contact the course director Aaron Scheffler (aaron.scheffler@ucsf.edu) for assistance. He will be available to meet with students via Zoom.
  • For course information, please visit the CLE course website: https://courses.ucsf.edu/course/view.php?id=7510. Lecture content on the CLE course website is still being updated, but the schedule and syllabus are posted and finalized. Try not to look beyond the current week, as content is being updated and changed to facilitate remote learning.

Have a great quarter and please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions! A description of the course format is pasted below for your review.

****************************

Course format: Twice weekly lectures introduce the substantive content for each module, which is subsequently reinforced in weekly applied assignments. Weekly computer lab sessions give students the opportunity to learn to use the software, ask questions, and have more interaction with faculty.

Lectures: Mondays and Thursdays: July 30 through September 10 (except Monday, September 7). Lectures are divided into two portions, 1. a pre-recorded 60-minute lecture covering the main content, and 2. 45-minute live “in-class” Zoom instruction.

1.    Twice weekly pre-recorded lecture posted to CLE. Students are expected to view this lecture prior to in-class instruction.

2.    1:00 to 1:45 PM: in-class Zoom instruction which will provide a summary of the pre-recorded lecture and give students a chance to ask questions and participate in activities to reinforce content introduced in the pre-recorded lectures.
