Thanks for your replies. I wonder if you're familiar with James Jackson's work on the affordances model. He argues that African Americans' drug use could be as a response to other circumstances (e.g. discrimination and unfair treatment) and that they are protecting their shorter term mental health to the longer term detriment of their physical health. I included some slides in today's lecture if you want to see his results and some of his arguments.
