Thanks Sanithia. Your point about non-racial biases – i.e. biases about contraception – and how they might be a structural issue contributing to health care disparities, is an interesting point. I agree this is a systems problem that may negatively impact women who are less empowered differentially. A similar argument could be made for other less prioritized/more stigmatized conditions, like infertility treatment and management of incontinence. And your fourth system barrier is right on target – and of course contraception has been treated differently than many other types of health care, so even in plans in which these types of disparities might not be present in all aspects of health care, they could be exacerbated by the way in which contraception is treated in our health care system (i.e. no barriers to getting Viagra, lots to getting pills or IUDs).
