I completed agree with the statement, I think that our final goal as scientific should translate our research’s results into the public good, on the other hand, we should try to get an adequate training in how to become advocates of our own research.
Usually, efforts to improve health have been concentrated in academic institutions, producing outstanding basic science and clinical investigators and clinicians through well-established training, research, and clinical programs, but we should look the balance between training in our career and training to involve stakeholders in our research goals. To develop advocacy in our research question will be the first steps in creating policy around our results.
A concept related to this is Community-based participatory research, CBPR is an approach to conducting research by equitably partnering researchers and those directly affected by and knowledgeable of the local circumstances that impact health.
I recommend reading the paper Researchers and Policymakers: Travelers in Parallel Universes(Ross et al, 2006, 164-172). This present paper highlight the often-parallel tracks of research and policy.
