Hi Tracy - the Taraban article you cited is very interesting and an excellent example of how important it is to account for the complexities of the relationships between predictor and outcome during analysis. This work reminds me that although infant/childhood development is often presented an experience closely tied to the mother, the immediate social context that an infant is born has a significant impact on her development and should not be discounted. I would be interested in seeing if the authors results were mimicked in a cohort of single mothers with strong social networks. Obviously 'marital quality' would not be a valid variable in that group, but it would interesting to see if there was a different social variable that accounted for a similar effect.
