Interesting proposal for part 2! So are you defining trauma exposure (your covariate) as an effect modifier that contributes to most/all of the association between mental health symptoms/diagnosis and substance use? It seems like, for this proposal, you would use generalized estimating equations (like in the Headen study) to study the effect of trauma exposure on this association.
