Biomaterial science is an established field that uses materials to study, monitor, and mimic biology to make materials. Tissue engineering is a field of biomaterial science that focuses on the use of permanent or degradable biomaterials for repairing, reconstituting, renewing, or improving live tissues. Regenerative Medicine focuses on the use of stem cells for tissue engineering applications. In this course we assume a basic understanding of material science and cell biology in order to discuss current trends in the field. Most classes will host guest speakers and may have to change. There are two assignments for this course: weekly readings and a final project presentation.
