Week Four, Part II: Questionnaires and Qualitative Research
Week Four, Part II: Questionnaires and Qualitative Research
Section outline
Many clinical studies include questionnaire measures or use qualitative methods to address a wide range of topics that rely upon patient-reported data, including human behavior, psychology, and informed decision-making. The module focuses on the design of study questionnaires and how to develop questions that are accurate and effectively evaluate the research hypothesis. Basic concepts and common methods of qualitative research are also introduced.
Objectives
After completing this module, students should be able to:
Describe steps an investigator can take to ensure that questionnaires and interviews are as valid and reproducible as possible.
Define open-ended questions and closed-ended questions and devise several examples of both types of questions.
Recognize desirable elements of questionnaire items, as well as common pitfalls to avoid in question design.
Design a one-page instrument that is easy to read, easy to understand, and suitable for data entry.
