I was unable to attend our last class with student presentations, but it was great seeing everyone's work on the course captures. Below are my comments/questions for some presenters!
Katie Brown:
I loved seeing how strongly the social determinants of health model is woven into your research study and design, examining the disparities in women's health care and abortion and its relationship to structural racism. Many times as a researcher, I feel that our community interventions only attempt to tackle a symptom of the deeper issue by engaging with the target population. However, I really appreciate how your study design seems to address the significant health disparity through an individual and a structural approach!
Curt Johanson:
I really enjoyed hearing about your research and how a provider's race/ethnicity can contribute to patient health outcomes. This is very similar to my work, in which we discovered that a provider's ethnicity and language skills can contribute to lower CRC screening rates. I would be interested to know if a diverse/URM group of physicians have greater, quantifiable health outcomes for patients from the same groups?
