Difference. between Program and Parent announcement

Hi Judy and Amy,

I’m still a little confused about the difference been a Program Announcement versus Parent Announcement. Can you clarify? Is  it correct that for the F31 we are all responding to this Program Announcement:

https://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PA-19-195.html

or this one

https://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PA-19-196.html

Thanks,

Sarah

Hi Sarah,

Yes, as long as your institute of interest is listed in the program announcement, then you can apply to the F31 PA above. They reissue the "parent" PA for the F31 every year or few years after getting approval at the NIH to continue this F31 funding mechanism (the two digits following "PA" in the number refer to the year so best to pick the PA for the latest year that's been issued, so in this case, 2019). The second PA above is specific to promoting diversity (as indicated in the title). We haven't talked about this but the F31 is unique in that it offers a diversity-specific F31. They define diversity as "underrepresented backgrounds, such as underrepresented racial and ethnic groups, persons with disabilities and those from disadvantaged backgrounds."

Hope that helps.
Amy
