It is not only unacceptable, but dangerous to avoid "political" and social discourse as a scientist, particularly if one researches health disparities or if one's research has the potential to be coopted by the capitalist forces that dictate our medical and scientific worlds. In considering how to balance being "objective" I find it critical to dissect what is considered "objective," who/what groups get to decide what is considered objective and what is biased? Every piece of our lives is necessarily political, and ignoring that cedes the power of scientists in their ability to ensure their work reaches patients. An example I've spent some time working in is police violence. Police unions have extraordinary power and motivation to ensure research into the health effects of policing and police violence are not shared. Everything from accessing appropriate data, to disseminating conclusions to news outlets and city governments, is impacted by the political, financial, and legal power of law enforcement agencies.
