Hello all,

Welcome to Biostat 212 - I look forward to meeting you all in the coming weeks! This is the first time this course is being offered online, so please bear with me and the rest of the team as we navigate this new teaching environment.

Later today I will post the first lecture with more information about course logistics as well as a brief introduction to the Stata software.

Most importantly, we will begin using Stata RIGHT AWAY during the first lab section. Please make sure you have Stata downloaded (very strongly preferred!) or have your MyResearch access set up PRIOR to class. In the past, students have found the MyResearch instance of Stata to be pretty unstable and difficult to work with, so downloading your own copy to your personal computer is highly recommended. See more info here:  https://www.stata.com/order/new/edu/gradplans/student-pricing/ Your PI may be able to cover your license fees. For this class, we will not be using any large datasets and Stata IC is fine - BUT you may find it is inadequate for the "real-world" analyses you need to do, and may want to select Stata SE if you will be working with a large number of variables in your own work.

I'm happy to take any questions you have about Stata or about the class before our first class next week. Please direct any questions regarding MyResearch access to the IT service desk: https://it.ucsf.edu/directory/team/it-service-desk (also see the instructions for setting up for Mac users below).

Thank you and again, welcome!

Amanda
