Some students have asked about budgeting resources for research data collection and management.
One student asked how to budget for a biostatistician. Biostatisticians do not do data collection and management. Do not include the cost of a biostatistician in your data collection and management budget.
Most small UCSF projects rely on a clinical research coordinator (CRC) with some help from the CTSI data management consultation service.
The CTSI data management consultation service charges $125 per hour.
The salary for a CRC (Job Code 9335) depends on the Step.

For Step 1, it is $63,036/year.
Add 43.5% for benefits:
https://brm.ucsf.edu/cbr/resources/benefit-rate-by-job-code-lookup
and you have $90,457 .You can assume a CRC costs ~$100k per year. If the CRC devotes 25% time to creating and maintaining the study data collection and management system, then estimate $25k per year. This does not include the so-called "indirects", which are taken off the top after the award is granted.
As data system designers, CRCs cost the project much more than consultants, but because they are viewed as a sunk cost, the difference isn't appreciated.
