Hello, I have a question regarding accessing STATA. It appears that the recommendation is to purchase STATA though we can also choose to use STATA over the server. What is the recommendation if we have access to STATA 13 through the MyResearch portal? Is that any better than using it over the class server? Thank you!
In response to Shalini's question--I have my own. Are you saying there's a way to access STATA without purchasing it? I still need a little time to decide which version is better for me since there is a significant cost difference, and if there was a way to access it for free in the meantime for the first class or so, that would be great. How do we access it over the class server?
It is my understanding that Stata can be accessed through the department's Stata server and (separately) through MyResearch. However, we recommend that you buy a copy of the Stata software and install it on your machine. If you will be conducting research, it is a worthwhile investment.
I'll second Wayne's response - generally better to have your own copy and be able to put the program where you want it and have full control. HOWEVER, if you are a MyResearch user already and can navigate the complexities of that system (may be a challenge to get data in and out), then that could work for you.
And, yes, you CAN actually use our Stata Server during the course - all students will be getting a login before Tuesday - but that won't be a good long term solution for you. Also, during class, the server often slows down given all the traffic and doesn't work that well.
So again, go for your own copy if you can! It is just easier and better.
Okay great, thank you!
