Kayla Karvonen - Neonatology Fellow (PGY5)

I have a few projects I'm working on currently that are at different phases of development. I'm not sure which one I will focus on during this class/to present. I am primarily interested in how structural racism impacts Black preterm infant health. I have a dataset to work with that includes charts of infants 2017-2019 in the UCSF NICU that was a chart pull. I also am collecting social data like CPS referrals, etc. which is still undergoing collection. My primary interest is to look for racial disparities in quality of care and patient experience. There's a few other datasets I have for retrospective review that are adjacent. I do not have any prospective or intervention based work at this time as I'm looking at baseline data first.

Looking forward to meeting you all!

Hi Kayla,

Your work sounds inspiring! I recently moved from MN where I worked at the University of Minnesota, School of Public Health with students of Dr. Rachel Hardeman (https://directory.sph.umn.edu/bio/sph-a-z/rachel-hardeman). She is also leading work around the impacts of structural racism on Black infants, mothers, and communities. It's been rewarding to read her publications and follow her work, you may also resonate with it if you haven't already been following.

Excited to learn with and from you this term,

Ashley
