Also, if I'm allowed to rant a bit myself, it sounds to me like the whole reason the study of demography saw a "second coming" was that the rich benefactors of WW2 had a meeting and wanted to know how much of a burden each underdeveloped country was going to be, and Notestein had the answers to that. So many authors from Europe and the U.S. are quick to pat themselves on the back for the advances in industrialization and "modernization" of their respective regions, which they then argue spread to poorer regions to trigger the changes in demography, but these authors unabashedly overlook their countries' roles in perpetuating underdevelopment in those countries.
