Dr. Kohn, Dr. Newman:
One more question regarding today's topic of variable selection for decision rules (slide #71) ---
As you know, techniques like factor analysis are used as data reduction techniques to identify underlying factors.
Let's say I have 20+ variables that could be included in a decision rule (similar to table 8.5, page 176, EBD textbook).
Could I use factor analysis to get a better handle on the variables? Instead of including 20+ variables in a decision rule (a lot from a clinical perspective), maybe factor analysis could help bring the # of variables down to 10 or 7.
Thoughts on this? Or, is there some contraindication to using a data reduction technique in the context of decision rules?
Thank you. - Raj
