The article for this weeks Journal discussion has been posted on the course website.  You should be able to access it and read, preferably the entire article.  The goal is to use the concepts you have learnt in class regarding statistical inference/tests in understanding/interpreting actual scientific studies, and to see how some of the concepts are applied in practice.

Key points for the discussion tomorrow are:

  1. What is statistical inference:  If you did your study and found a clear difference between groups, why should you proceed to perform statistical tests on the difference?
  2. P-values:  Identify p-values in the paper, state the null and alternative hypothesis tested by each p-value.  What meaning do these p-values have to you?
  3. Confidence intervals: Understand different ways to report variability around point estimates.  Do you think confidence intervals are important? What do they mean to you in your own study or in the study that you are reading?

See you in Lab tomorrow.

I also wanted to add a note about the format of tomorrow's lab, since some of you were wondering last week.  It will be the "new" format, plus the journal article discussion.  We will answer your questions about the assignment due tomorrow, review this week's lecture, have the journal article discussion, and then use the rest of the time to start work on the next assignment, with the TAs available to answer questions.  Also, please note that we are planning to combine the 2 sections into 1 room (6702) for the lecture review and journal article discussion, so please spread the word!

Thanks for your suggestions and participation!
