Is it very important to obtain the newest version of STATA? Will use of an older version be problematic? (I have stata 11.)

Some relatively small features will be a bit different for Stata 11, but I think you'll be OK for almost everything. Stata 12 appears to be very close to Stata 13, but Stata 13 was just released, so I'm still learning its quirks!
