Race - genetic and social construct

Race - genetic and social construct

A couple of ideas brought up in class today:

- Ian Whittmarsh (What's the Use of Race?) could be a good discussant

- Please create a friendly space in which we can ask for definitions (especially for non-clinicians and geneticists)

- Interesting to talk about application in face of changing and complexities of racial identities (e.g. bi- or multi-racial) and how this applies in regions outside the US.

I would be happy to attend this session.

I have a great discussion with Dr. Laura Fejerman after the most recent Health Disparities conference about genetic ancestry and cancer research, which I think would be an interesting topic to discuss.

I realize that I'm confused about this post. I thought this was a request for a discussion during class time. Now I'm understanding that these posts are in response to Maria's question about having a "mixer" btw genetic researchers and disparities researchers. So never mind about my making time next week! Of course, if there are other questions people want to raise before we dive into behavioral determinants, I'm happy to entertain.

Thank you so much for your post. Yes, I definitely agree that we need to make sure everyone feels comfortable asking for definitions and clarifications - we are a very multidisciplinary group with diverse areas of expertise so that is essential. As faculty, we will work to create that space, and I encourage all of you to call us out when things aren't clear or when added explanation would be helpful. Thank you for pointing that out!
