As I mentioned in class, we are offering a 2 unit course (FOR FREE!) next quarter to build on what is in this course. Information below, and here is the website:

http://ticr.ucsf.edu/courses/schedule/advanced_health_disparities.html

If you are interested, let me know. If you want official credit you can register for EPI 296, Independent Study, for  2 units under Christine Dehlendorf as the faculty member.

This Spring, we will be offering a new course, Advanced Concepts and Methods in Research on Health Disparities and the Social Determinants of Health.  This course will provide advanced coverage of the foundational concepts in and methods used for investigating and addressing differences in health by race/ethnicity and socioeconomic status, as well as other dimensions of inequality (e.g., gender identity and sexual orientation). The relationship of social determinants to health outcomes, and the widespread and persistent existence of disparities in health, is receiving increasing attention in public health, clinical care and research. The methodologic approaches used by those interested in understanding and addressing health disparities are diverse — ranging from research on the impact of policy, to research on health care disparities, to genetic studies. Those involved in conducting research in this area require an understanding of the spectrum of methods used in order to inform their work and to contextualize their own projects in the landscape of health disparities research. This course will use guided discussion of seminal and illustrative papers to provide a conceptual background on research on health disparities and the social determinants of health and to examine methods used in this discipline.

Course sessions will be held on Monday from 1-3, with the option for completing written assignments if unable to attend.

Please email the course director, Christine Dehlendorf, at christine.dehlendorf@ucsf.edu if you are interested in this course. This year there will be no fee for taking the course.
