Lab 3 Data Analysis questions regarding relations of variables

Hi.

I have been struggling through the last portion of Lab 3 and have questions regarding the "is one variable related to another" research questions.  I plan to attend office hours, however, was hoping to get an answer to try to work through prior.  As of now, for Q1a and Q2a I am using the command "tabulate" for the frequency.  However, for Q1b and Q2b, and according to lecture 1, I can use the tab [var1] [var2] for 2 categorical variables.  However, when I do tab age foundonstreet, I dont get an answer that I can analyze.  Do you have a suggestion for what I may be doing wrong and possibly point me in the right direction?  I also looked through the forums and couldnt get any insight.  Anyhting is appreciated.

Thank you.

Kimberly:

A disclaimer before I respond - I am taking STATA in this class and have no prior experience. For age and foundonstreet, I used t-test as age is a continuous variable and foundonstreet is dichotomous...

hope that helps

Hello Kimberly,

As Ralph mentions, you will need to use different statistical tests depending on the type of variable you're analyzing. In Lecture 1, Mark reviews the various statistical tests that can be used for different types of variables. On slide 37, he reviews statistical tests for 2 categorical variables. On slide 41, he reviews various statistical tests for 1 categorical variable and 1 continuous variable. Hope that helps, and please let us know if you have more questions.

Thanks!
