This week we familiarize ourselves with the course and the course materials. We will also examine some of the major concepts and theories of how organizations behave and organization theory. We will also begin to consider some of the major organizational theories, their connection to health care and the behavior of healthcare organizations. We’ll begin to consider the current economic context of nursing practice in the US (Waxman Chapter 1…. only pages 1-11).

For most of the units and discussions in this course, approach the reading, discussions, and the assignments from the leadership perspective. As DNP leaders, a working understanding of health care economics and finance are essential. You may be in a position now or in the near future to have to utilize or create a budget for a program or initiative. Our course-long project in this class will be to create a program or initiative, consider the implications and needs from an organizational / economic perspective. It can be anything you choose as long as it is REALISTIC and attainable (you may even want to explore your DNP project idea from this lens). More about this in the next couple weeks!
