Dear enrollees in Epidemiology 212 (Publishing & Presenting Clinical Research):
Thanks for submitting your first assignment for this course by the deadline yesterday.
Those of you who chose Option 1 for this assignment will receive feedback on your draft abstract from either Carrie Gibson or myself over the next two weeks. A few of you who submitted your assignments early may already have received feedback from one of us. We look forward to learning more about your research and helping you communicate effectively about your work.
If you chose Option 2, we’ll take a look at your proposed revisions to the sample draft abstract about a smoking cessation study. But we have now posted a video demonstrating one approach to editing this sample abstract—used in an on-line course sponsored by the UCSF Clinical & Translational Science Institute (“Writing Clinical Research Reports”). You can find this video demonstration at the end of module 1 on the syllabus or try the link below:

When it comes to research writing, there is no single “correct answer,” and each of you is working to develop your own voice. But we hope these exercises will help you master important conventions about research reporting, as well as strengthen your approach to summarizing your research (and the research of others).
Best wishes,
Alison Huang
