Submitting work done in Remote Desktop Environment

Hi all,

I overheard a bit of this discussion during out computer lab, but did not quite catch the solution. How do we load our do and log files to CLE via the Microsoft Remote Desktop? I have tried logging into CLE itself and the my.transfer.ucsf.edu but in both cases I was not able to authenticate using DUO (received an error that "this page cannot be displayed"). Has anyone found a workaround?

Thanks in advance!

Katherine

Hi Katherine,

I believe Crystal is looking into this. In the meantime, please reach out to UCSF IT to try and resolve any DUO or MyTransfer issues

I called IT and they don't know how to move the files from the remote desktop (aka file explorer RAE) to mytransfer. They have created a ticket with the research team at UCSF to see if there is a way to do so. Will let you know when I hear back.

Thanks, Amy. This extra hassle is one of the reasons we recommend installing stata locally (though I can certainly understand the appeal of free software!!). Hopefully the response from IT will not take too long.

In the meantime, I did a quick Google search and found this MyTransfer Quick Reference: https://data.ucsf.edu/sites/g/files/tkssra746/f/MyTransferQuickReferenceGuide.pdf
At the top of page 5, the guide references how to delete files from MyTransfer. In the screenshot, you can see a "Download" option. I would assume this would download to your local computer. Might be worth a try.

Hi Katherine, In order to upload documents to the CLE, you need to move the files to your local computer via MyTransfer. Then you can upload directly to the CLE. If you are unable to login to MyTransfer please contact IT.

Basically what happens is that I can get to UC websites on RAE (e.g. UCSF email, MyTransfer), however, when it comes time to authenticate with Duo, I cannot. Therefore I cannot log into my e-mail or MyTransfer. When I try to navigate to G-mail for example, that is blocked. In that sense, my files are "trapped" in the research environment. I called IT and have a ticket number, but they haven't reached me about a solution yet.

Prof Langlais - I can see how it would be way easier to just load STATA locally, but it is a bit expensive. Are you aware of any free trials or ways to get it paid for through UCSF?

Hi Katherine - Sorry for the hassle, hope IT gets back to you soon.
The cheapest option for local install is to buy a 6 month license of Stata BE. I think it is $48. The pricing for students can be found here: https://www.stata.com/order/new/edu/profplus/student-pricing/
Just be mindful that if you continue on with TICR courses, you most likely will need Stata again in the future so you may need to purchase again. And also be mindful that the BE version will likely be unable to handle real-world (non-classroom) datasets.
