Re: working fewer hours. I also thought that that was a really interesting idea, but I wonder if its really so simple. First of all, most people nowadays work with the expectation that they will retire and not have to work. I think there would have to be a substantial cultural shift for people in their 60/70's to just start working part time if not motivated by necessity. Secondly, this idea presupposes that more part time jobs will be created just because people have a preference for them. This seems like wishful thinking. Finally, another presupposition made is that the types of jobs are trending away from physical labor towards knowledge based jobs. I heard the other day that there is a labor shortage in the U.S. (11 million unfilled jobs?). This makes me wonder if this trend (physical jobs--> knowledge based jobs) still holds true.
