Preston article: This article had interesting findings overall that decreased smoking-related mortality is projected to offset obesity-related mortality in men, but they are practically even in women. However, as others have mentioned, I am also a little hesitant to buy the authors' measures for smoking-related mortality being lung cancer deaths, and basically looking at survivability (all-cause mortality) by BMI classification using BMI-specific life tables.
