1.  Announcements:
** I have posted answers to HW 5 and the assignment for HW 6

** Reminder: it's no too early to write a potential exam problem. E mail them to your TA; cc me if you would like me to read it.  Include a pdf of the paper it's about.

** If you get this message and are NOT taking this class, make sure you are not registered!  We have had people who missed Registrar deadlines and either had to pay to drop the course of had to be given an F because they were enrolled and did no work.   Tomorrow (10/14) is the last day for study list filing and Nov 10 is the last day for changes.

** One of the section leaders said last year a figure in the homework did not display right in an older version of Word.  I'm posting a pdf of Assignment 6 just in case.

2.  Clarification:

Lead time bias, length bias and pseudodisease can all distort effects of a randomized trial of screening IF IT IS NOT ANALYZED PROPERLY.  Martina illustrated this with the Mayo Lung Study:  looking at survival, the screening looked good, but actually it was probably harmful.

3.  Suggestion:

Come to class -- both lecture and section!  We faculty like seeing you and getting to know you, and we can't if you don't show up.  Also, section leaders report to me that those who come to section do better on the homework!  It's not surprising.  Don't forget that right before small groups the faculty and TA's are all going over the homework that will be assigned that day, as well as the assignment that is due.  So we have the problems we know you will be working on next week fresh in our heads, so we might make clarifying points from the lecture that specifically address hard problems!

Have a good week!
