Intervention

Online module didactic for shared decision making in contraception counseling.

Target population

All providers of family planning services, including, but not limited to OBGYNs, general practitioners, internists, Family Medicine physicians, nurse practitioners, certified nurse midwives, and physician assistants.

Study population

The study population is providers in clinics receiving FamilyPACT (Family Planning, Access, Care, and Treatment) funding in California.

Differences between the study population and the target population

1)   Differences in things that could affect the outcome: Baseline knowledge of shared decision making, practice type, provider type, years of experience

2)   Differences in a mediator of the effect: Patient population, difference in desires of patients, patient load, baseline knowledge of shared decision making

3)   If I have done a randomized trial in my study population, I would need to know following things from my target population to estimate the effect of the intervention in your target population without repeating the trial in the target population:  Provider types, counseling techniques, all other factors listed above.

Dear Sanithia, I like how you evaluated differences on both the provider and the patient level that might affect your outcome/ mediator of the effect. I was wondering what specific characteristics in the patient population would add to these differences? Do you expect that there are systematic differences e.g. in race / SES / age between your target and the study population?

I'm looking forward to further discussion in class!

Hi Sanithia,

I agree with Christine. It is best to be specific as possible in defining the target and study population. It seems like you might have a broad range here. Maybe interesting to look at this from the patients perspective as well? It might help to draw out a diagram to better clarify S1 and S2. Overall good work though.

I'm not sure all our mediators are mediators (can they be affected by the intervention?) but your right on in terms of the logic of the exercise - thing about what those mediators are or the things that affect your outcome and obtain those measurements from your target population.

Hi Sanithia,

I was thinking a lot about the COM-B framework when devising differences in mediators, and as I'm sure you've identified in previous assignments, this could provide a lot of potential mediators. I think Christine hits on a few of them in her comment, but would also emphasize focus on the provider level to generate some potential mediators for this.
