This site is dedicated to keeping you informed about the unique opportunities available through participation in the Dyad Training Program for Collaboration in Advanced Practice Psychiatric Nursing and Clinical Pharmacy.
We are a collaboration between the UCSF School of Nursing, the UCSF School of Pharmacy, and two community partners, Alameda County Behavioral Health and Bonita House. We are funded by the National Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education. Learn more about us here: https://scienceofcaring.ucsf.edu/education/novel-ipe-partnership-aims-expand-access-mental-health-careOur goal is to prepare PharmDs and psychiatric nurse practitioners to work together to provide excellent team-based care to individuals recovering from psychiatric and substance use disorders. To do this, we are building new bridges between students, residents, and providers in pharmacy and nursing around the topic of mental health. The knowledge and professional relationships that we aim to foster will help prepare today's students and residents to dramatically improve access to quality mental health care for all Americans.
Opportunities:
1. Shared Classes:
- CP 152.05 - A Behavioral Health Perspective (Patrick Finley) - Spring
- N 206B - Advanced Clinical Management of Psychiatric Conditions (Chelsea Landolin) - Winter & Spring
2. Collaborative Treatment Planning - a 1-hr exercise that matches pharmacy students & psychiatric NP students to work together on treatment plan for a complex case - Winter
3. Interprofessional Psychiatric Journal Club - this journal club meets twice monthly (second and fourth Thursdays, 5-6pm) to discuss new and important research articles on psychiatry, with an emphasis on advances in psychopharmacology. This popular club requires student leadership. It is facilitated by Seth Gomez, PharmD, BCPP, a practicing psychiatric pharmacist from Alameda County Behavioral Health Care Services. Food is provided. Remote participation via Zoom is available for most sessions. - Fall, Winter, Spring
4. Clinical Experiences - subject to availability, we will match pharmacy students and/or residents with psychiatric NP students in their clinical sites in the community. These student pairs will have the opportunity to work together to evaluate and treat patients under the supervision of an NP or physician preceptor and a PharmD preceptor - Fall, Winter, and Spring
5. Certificate - those who complete the available components of the program are eligible to receive a certificate recognizing them for successful completion of this interprofessional program. This can be a useful resume builder for future educational pursuits or as a demonstration that you have learned to work collaboratively with other professions, a skill that is extremely useful in the workplace.
