Dear enrollees in Publishing & Presenting Clinical Research:

I hope you are all looking forward to the end of your TICR academic year, as well as the gradual relaxation of restrictions on more activities and businesses in the SF Bay area)!

For those of you who some day hope to share the results of your research with the public, please note our final, interactive course session this Tuesday, June 2, at 3 pm, entitled "Being Newsworthy." You can use the following link to join the session by Zoom: https://ucsf.zoom.us/j/92462498909?pwd=UVhJYjROZTNmdGdXZ3RtcFVRRE05UT09

Alternately, you can open up the Zoom app and then enter the Zoom meeting ID: 924 6249 8909, Zoom meeting password: 136139. Please note that UCSF IT has announced that UCSF users of Zoom need to update to the latest version of Zoom 5.0 in order to get access to UCSF Zoom-based events.

This session focuses on strategies for disseminating study results in the lay press, including working with university public information officers to prepare concise but engaging press releases, summarize study results in ways that are both scientifically appropriate and easy for lay audiences to digest, and address subsequent questions and interview requests from reporters, media outlets, and the public.

No special preparation is required. But If you happen to have a research study for which you may want to prepare a press release in the future, we encourage you to be preparing to describe it in a one-line statement during the session. Dr. Margot Kushel, UCSF Professor of Medicine, and Ms. Laura Kurtzman, UCSF Senior Public Information Representative, may be able to help you develop material for a future press release.

And you are encouraged to read or listen to mainstream news (NYT, Wash Post, NPR, SF Chronicle), pay attention to clinical research stories that got covered, and come prepared to discuss why they think the reporter decided to cover the story.

Best wishes,

Alison Huang, Epi 212 course director
