PT Bias HW, q7 clarifications from lecture

Hi all,

In reading through other questions and looking back at the lecture slides, I wished to point out a few clarifications that may help for q7:

a. in the slide deck posted before class for 2/18, slide 30 says at the top that it refers to "Person Time and Bias, Question 6a". As hopefully most realized, on this year's assignment, this scenario refers to question 7.

b. When we talk about eligibility (E) for the line diagrams, it can be confusing bc the term "eligibility" has multiple meanings. In a broad sense, an eligible participant enrolls into a cohort like CaPSURE when they sign the consent form and are considered part of the underlying cohort. However, for these specific time-line diagrams, we are referring to when someone is eligible to be included in the analysis. Accordingly, note the edits one might make to the instruction assumptions below. The paper is entirely focused on those who received either surgery or radiation, as stated at the end of the intro and as reviewed in slide 30 in class last week. I realized referring to general eligibility for CaPSURE in the first line could have been confusing. Hope this is helpful.

good luck!

Thanks Dr. Chan for clarifying.
I have one more query. What point is considered as "start of study". Is it the same time as assessing eligibility and start of follow up or is it at the time of enrolment or in-between enrolment and treatment?

Hi Sujata,
I believe you are asking about the portion: "participants were classified into two groups once - "ever" or "never - at the start of the study" using all follow-up data available." In this sentence, "start of study" refers to the start of follow-up for this analysis. Please note, a key part of this question is to consider the total window over which exposure was assessed, relative to time 0 and E.

Hope that helps,
June
