This study aims to evaluate the implementation of an interactive online module teaching about shared decision-making in contraceptive care to family planning providers. The goal of this interview guide is to understand providers’ experience with and understanding of shared decision making, as well as their experience with the interactive online module, using the COM-B framework.

  1. Can you tell me about your contraceptive counseling practices? How does your clinical environment influence your counseling practices? (capability and opportunity)
    1. This aims to understand their clinical environment and how it influences their counseling styles, if at all.
  2. How important is using shared decision making for contraceptive counseling to you as a provider?  How do you think patients value it? There is often limited in family planning appointments, can you tell me about a scenario where you recognized you were not using shared decision making; what were the barriers? (opportunity and motivation)
    1. This aims to assess how shared decision making if viewed by and valued by the provider, if at all. Using an episode where they chose not to use shared decision making may help understand motivations of providers.
  3. Can you tell me whether and how your understanding of shared decision making for contraceptive counseling changed before and after the online module?  How were those changes related to the interactive online module? (capability)
    1. This aims to assess baseline knowledge and understand the benefit of the online module as their known changed over time. It will also identify strengths and weaknesses of the module.
  4. What do you feel would better equip you to incorporate shared decision making into your clinical practice? Do you feel having decision aids would assist you in incorporating shared decision making into your clinical practice? (capability and opportunity)
    1. This aims to assess other not previously identified barriers to implementing shared decision making in contraceptive counseling, and gap in the interactive online module.

Hi Sanithia, great interview guide! I think you might even separate some of the questions as the questions seem to capture multiple aspects/components of the COM-B framework. E.g. by asking about the challenges/barriers in the second questions, this could also tell you something about opportunities (or missed opportunities) to and help inform how to further improve your intervention. Overall, I think your interview guide captures all the components of the COM-B very well!

Outstanding questions - very nice.  I like how you asked about opportunities up front in order to understand the precieved effects of your intervention on motivation and capability.

Really great work! I think this accurately incorporates all of the COM-B model and the questions build off of each other very well. Really well done!

Great question guide. I'm wondering if there is any benefit to having the providers define what is shared decision-making. For instance, you could ask a very general "what is shared decision-making and how does it related to contraceptive prescribing." Also, would there be ask anything of the patients, to see if the intervention impacted their providers' counseling and prescribing practices?
