Conflict Transformation Lesson

When Carol arrived in Geeta's hospital room, a conflict occurred between her and Eleanor, the charge nurse. They managed to move through the conflict quickly in order to provide care to Geeta. They agreed to discuss their concerns later in a debrief.

Geeta progressed quickly after oxytocin was started since this brought on stronger contractions. She gave birth to a healthy, alert baby girl two hours after arriving in the hospital. She didn't appear to notice the conflict between Carol and Eleanor.

After everyone finished their tasks and Geeta was comfortably breastfeeding her daughter, Eleanor asked Carol and Aleya, the nurse, to participate in a debrief. Aleya was invited to facilitate the process discussion about the conflict that occurred between them.

Eleanor expressed concern about the timeliness of the transfer. She explained that from the time that they were notified Carol was transferring in with Geeta to the time they actually arrived was quite long. She explained that not enough information was provided about Geeta’s status and the reason for transfer. Eleanor expressed that she would have liked more information about the reason for transfer and Geeta’s well-being. Instead, she had to search for this information and wait for Carol's arrival to receive a report.

Carol acknowledged Eleanor's concern and explained why she thought the transfer occurred the way it did. She suggested that in order to improve home birth transfers for the future, they should outline the information needed by hospital staff for both non-urgent and urgent transfers.
