Section outline

  • Lecture: Race, ethnicity, social class and conceptual frameworks

Introduction to terminology used to classify race, ethnicity––how to measure. Other constructs relevant to disparities methods such as social class, wealth, culture, and education. Examples from clinical research studies will be used to illustrate the points. Presentation of Conceptual Frameworks used to understand mechanisms of Health Disparities.

    • Assignment:

  • Lecture: Managing systems, neighborhood and place and population health
Two global areas of factors contributing to understanding of mechanisms of health disparities are covered: 1) Systems of care defining access in a broad way and how these may affect disadvantaged patients; and 2) research on neighborhood influences on health disparities, with a focus on different approaches to measurement of neighborhood.

  • Lecture: Individual behavioral and biological factors and communication with clinicians

Two global areas of factors contributing to understanding of mechanisms of health disparities are covered: 1) Individual behavioral factors such as cigarette smoking and physical activity, and their relationship to biological factors and how these may affect health disparities; 2) Communication between patients and their clinicians with a special emphasis on language, literacy and numeracy.

    • Assignment:

  • Lecture:  Identifying and selecting self-report measures for health disparities research: part I

Basic measurement terminology and principles; overall process of selecting self-report measures for a specific study; how to locate candidate measures to review for appropriateness. Homework will involve reviewing one existing measure using a structured template.

  • Lecture: Using mixed methods in disparities research

Present rationale and applications of mixed methods in health disparities research. Overview of mixed methods study designs and data analysis.

  • Lecture: Statistical issues in disparities research: mediation

A conceptual discussion of how variables lying along a causal pathway may explain health disparities.

    • Assignment:

  • Lecture:  Identifying and selecting self-report measures for health disparities research: part II

Continuation of criteria for reviewing and critiquing measures including rationale, resources, and examples from health disparities research. Because most measures will require some modifications, issues in modifying measures will be presented. Homework will involve completing the review of an existing measure.
