In our nurse-midwifery/WHNP education program we acknowledge that linguistically appropriate care is a fundamental component of equitable and safe care. It is in line with our mission and values. Our program requires that any student who desires to use a language other than English in clinical encounters done without a translator become certified as a “bilingual clinician” or " bilingual staff" by taking the Qualified Bilingual Staff (QBS) or Clinician Cultural and Linguistic Assessment (CCLA) exam. This exam certifies the clinician as a “bilingual” and allows them to use that language for critical encounters, non-critical encounters and emergency situations. It does not allow the person to provide third party interpretation.
